In 1980 Robert was appointed as Development Principle for the Church of England during which amongst many other things was responsible for setting up a unique 'Bank Account' for the Church of England, such that all monies in current accounts of all churches were regarded as one account and interest paid on the total amount.
In 1986 Robert established his own group of nursing homes.
He bought the first home for £350,000 with a loan from the bank along with some personal capital.
That was sold in 2006 for £43million.
A brand new nursing home was built in 2005, at a cost of £5million and whilst running it Robert was also Vicar of Pool Quay Church, which he remodelled and it is now used for a wide range of activities and hailed as one of the best examples of remodelling work in the country.
More recently Robert bought several hotels across the country, including The Wordsworth Hotel, Ednam House Hotel, Dalhousie Castle, Doxford Hall and Eshott Hall.
He also purchased Guyzance Estate, Northumberland which houses nine cottages, alongside Guyzance Hall, a significant event venue for weddings and parties.
Robert is married to Gina and has four children and ten grandchildren.
